When the Crp Ends: A Look at Production Alternatives for Highly Erodible Land in Southern Iowa

This report examines the potential use of land currently under CRP contract in a three-county region in southern Iowa. The objectives are twofold: first, to inventory or assess the productivity and ownership characteristics of CRP land in this region and, second, to predict the possible use for these land resources should the CRP cease to exist. In particular, we are concerned with the impact that changing economic conditions, agricultural policy, and technology might have on this transition. The broader consequences of CRP termination in terms of rural economic activity or environmental quality in the region will be examined indirectly, reflected primarily in terms of changes in farm income, land use, and potential rates of soil erosion.

What Kulch Accomplished, What Kulch Left Out

The general rule that an at-will employee can be discharged at any time for any or no reason is not the case in Ohio, because it has developed a wrongful discharge exception to the employment at-will doctrine. Under this doctrine, an employer who wrongfully discharges an employee in violation of clear public policy is subject to an action for damages. The Ohio legislature enacted the Whistleblower’s Statute, which allows the terminated whistleblower to maintain a cause of action against his employer. The Ohio Supreme Court has strengthened protection by allowing the terminated employee to bring common law action for wrongful discharge as well. However, the court failed to properly address what exact remedies the whistleblower may be entitled to recover, merely stating that recovery may be cumulative, but disallowing double recovery. Part II of this article discusses the factual background of the Kulch case, Part III outlines the potential causes of action, and Parts IV and V discuss available remedies and recovery options. The article concludes by summarizing what the court accomplished and what issues are left to be resolved

A Contemporary, Color-Enhanced Herbicide Site of Action Bulletin

Incidences of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes continue to increase throughout the Midwest. Management approaches to reduce the selection of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes include rotating herbicides based on modes or sites of action. The University of Illinois Extension bulletin, Utilizing Herbicide Site of Action to Combat Weed Resistance to Herbicides, establishes a classification based on 14 sites of action with each individual site of action coded with a distinct primary color. This bulletin is intended to enhance the ability of growers to rotate herbicides based on site of action to slow further development of herbicide-resistant weed biotypes

Coronagraphic Observations of Lunar Sodium

This grant supported an investigation of lunar sodium by our coronagraph and spectrograph on nearby Mount Lemmon. We report successful operation and data analysis during International Lunar Atmosphere Week, September 15 - 22, 1995, and submittal of a paper to Icarus. The core of the proposed work was to observe the lunar sodium atmosphere with our classical Lyot coronagraph and specially-built grating spectrograph on Mount Lemmon, a 9400-foot peak about an hour's drive from Tucson. It is optimized for low scattered light and for observing from the Moon's limb to an altitude of approx.1 lunar radius. The grating has 600 lines/mm and a blaze angle of 49 deg., and is used with a somewhat wide slit at a resolving power of about 5000. It is called DARRK for the initials of the people who designed it. The rejection of stray light from the Moon's disk is spectacularly good: when the sky is clear this light is absent right up to a few arcsec from the limb. We use an excellent 1024 by 1024 pixel CCD camera, operated at -100 C; the exposures are 10 to 30 min. Data reduction is done with IRAF running on a Sun Sparcstation
